When I heard in October that Benazir Bhutto was to return to Pakistan, my first thought was that she was signing her own death warrant. I tried to remind myself that I’m a terrible cynic and that she knew what she was doing, she would have adequate security and protection . . . but I don’t think I’m alone in being unsurprised and horribly saddened by her assassination today.
I hope that her visions of a democratic Pakistan have not died with her.
Terribly tragic, the whole lot of them.
