Games People Play

Last time I was in DC, Reese and I did some shopping at Toys R Us. We managed to make it out without buying any Sea Monkeys on this particular visit, but we did buy a whole lot of games.

We got some fun board games such as Stratego and The Game of Life, Pirates of the Caribbean Version. We also got Mille Bornes, which I loved when I was a kid, but we haven’t played it yet.

Another good purchase was Boggle, which is one of my all-time favorite games. Reese and I are fairly well matched, so every round has been a challenge.

We were looking for but didn’t find Mastermind, so when Reese came to Austin I took her to Great Hall Games. The idea was that we’d buy Mastermind and Boggle, but one of the store employees suggested Syzygy as an alternative. We bought it, but haven’t played it yet.

Turns out Reese and I both like jigsaw puzzles, so we bought this one. It’s a good thing, too, as it gave us something to do after we’d done our mad shopping expedition the day before we flew to Detroit. I’m hoping my cat didn’t make too much of a mess of the puzzle pieces while I’m gone!

The true treasure this time around, though, was recommended by the same store employee when I asked about two-player games. He suggested we try Lost Cities. It’s made by the same folks who created Settlers of Catan, and it’s wonderful. It’s totally addictive: we play for hours! It’s another game where we’re well matched, which makes it a lot more fun to play.

It’s a little bit scary that game stores are almost as dangerous as book stores for us!

  • Hold on — I thought we got the sea monkeys on that visit to Toys ‘R Us? Wasn’t there just one visit to that store? And the Mille Bornes… We didn’t buy that one. I just happened to own it. (There’s just no telling what is to be found in my apartment. At least, unlike my brother, I do not have a carefully sealed and labelled bag containing four bottle caps and some ash.)

Mille Borne? Lordy I haven’t played that in ages! *sniff* memories…

I was actually lamenting our lack of games last night when I decided to do my annual sit-and-play with the kids night. We ended up making up a game w/ math dice (psychotic, but oddly fun).

    Vic’s got me into Rummikub

There used to be a group of lesbians who met one Friday a month for game night, but they ended up disbanding. They are going to try to start it up again this month. I’m looking forward to that. It’s difficult to find people to play games with…well, you know what I mean. LOL

    • Stacia says:

Can you play Rummkub with just two players? I told Reese about it but we didn’t really look for it because I thought you needed more players.

We’ve been playing with 3, but Vicki says you can play with two.

As a matter of fact, we bought 3 sets of it when we started going to game night – but they canceled it right after our first visit. (Since we’re now invited to their new game night at their home, I’m going to assume it wasn’t us. LOL)

But we have 1 we’ve been using, 1 we will give to them and 1 additional new/unopened game. If you email me the address of which location you want the game sent to, we will be happy to send it to you guys. It’s not doing anything but taking up extra space…that we could be using for books. LOL

really? We might be jumping up and down with glee happy to buy that from you!

        • jrosestar says:

We refuse to let you buy it. It’s just taking up space at our house, so we’d just like to get rid of it. :D It’s yours, we just have to get it to you.

BTW – we are strongly considering attending the following event in Austin:

Jolie du Pre and Kelly M. Marshall at BookWoman
          Saturday, October 27, 2007

We are hoping to bike down (weather willing) and probably stay at a Hampton Inn somewhere close by there. Are you – or both of you – going to be in Austin then? Perhaps we could meet you before the signing for dinner or something. Who knows, maybe convince you all to come to the motel and play a few rounds of the game.

          :D

Talk to me!
